Whether they actually read as real, how they cut, where corners stop being worth it, and the handful of limits that do exist. This one is from our own jobs rather than from a spec sheet.
Mostly, yes, and more convincingly than we expected. The honest version is this: most of them look real until you get close enough to touch them. At normal viewing distance across a room, on a wall you walk past rather than lean on, the illusion holds. It is your hand that gives it away, not your eye.
That is the right way to think about where these belong. A feature wall, a chimney breast, a commercial reception, an exterior elevation: all fine, because nobody is running their palm along it. A surface people touch constantly, at close range, in good light, is where you start asking more of the product than it can give.
Four reasons, and the first is the boring one that matters most: the range. Brick, stone, wood, concrete, slate, tile, bamboo and metal, with a great many designs inside each. When a client wants a specific look, the odds of finding it in one catalogue are high, and not having to mix suppliers across a job is worth more than it sounds.
Then quality, which has been consistent. Then weight: the panels are light, roughly five to six pounds each, and one person can hold one against a wall while the other checks the line. That single fact changes how quickly a job goes.
And then the things that only show up once you are actually ordering. They ship quickly. They are genuinely helpful on the phone, which is rarer than it should be. And their samples are actual product, not a printed swatch or a photograph, so what you show a client is what arrives. We have specified from a lot of catalogues where that was not true.
Pricing has been fair and has matched the estimate. No surprises between quote and invoice, which for a made-to-order product is not a given.
We have not yet hit an application we could not execute. Interior and exterior have both worked. We have done full commercial installations and residential work spanning the whole length of a house, twelve foot walls, and small insets in a single room.
Two caveats worth having, though, because "we have never had a problem" is not the same as "there are no limits."
Rooms with a lot of angles are harder than they look. Not impossible, but slower and more wasteful. Cutting odd angles and then getting them to meet cleanly at a true ninety degree corner is the fiddly part, and it is where a job stops being a weekend and starts being a week. Price that in before you commit to a room with bay windows, returns and reveals.
The fire-rated panels cannot go outside. This one is the manufacturer's own limit, not ours. The fire-rated version carries an ASTM E84 Class A rating but is not waterproof, so it is interior only, and it adds $13.25 per panel. The standard panels are the ones rated for exterior use. Texture Plus is also clear that no version should be in direct contact with open flames or heating elements. If you are considering a use that involves standing water, flooring or a fireplace, ask them directly rather than assuming from a general guide, including this one.
We have cut these with everything from a utility blade to a finishing saw, and both work. Choose by how clean an edge you need rather than by what the instructions suggest.
The thing to actually watch is that the lighter, more foam-like designs will break if you are careless with them. Not fragile exactly, but they do not forgive being levered or unsupported over a span. Tape across the cut line and support the panel properly and you will not have a problem. And if you do chip one, touching up is easy, which takes most of the fear out of it.
This is the single most useful thing on this page. Use a corner piece wherever you can.
Mitring works, and on a plain design it is fine. But mitring an interlocking panel, or a faux brick or stone where the pattern has to read continuously around the corner, gets difficult fast. You will cut, check, recut, and sometimes waste more material than the corner piece would have cost. The corner pieces exist precisely because that joint is hard, and at around $52.95 each they are cheaper than the panels you will ruin learning to mitre them.
Interlocking panels leave far more room for error than square-edged ones, which is why we default to them. They slide together on walls that are not perfectly plumb, and between the overlap and a bead of colour-matched caulk you can hide a surprising number of imperfections. Nobody will be the wiser.
That forgiveness is the practical argument for interlock over standard, quite apart from the seamless look the manufacturer sells it on. It is also worth knowing that interlock panels cover less wall than their nominal size, because the edges overlap. Our calculator uses the real coverage figure for each design rather than the 2 by 4 foot nominal, which on an average wall is a two panel difference.
Any panel product repeats, and on a large wall it is somewhat evident if you are looking for it. In practice, across the jobs we have done, nobody has noticed or remarked on it. Treat it as something to be aware of when you are laying out a very large elevation, not as a reason to avoid the product.
You can absolutely run two panels vertically, and on anything over four feet you will have to. The one piece of advice: tell Texture Plus that is your plan when you order. Flagging it up front is the difference between a horizontal seam that disappears and one you spend a day trying to disguise.
The manufacturer specifies construction adhesive and screws in every joint, and that is what we do. We pre-drill some panels, but we have fixed plenty with small drywall screws straight in and have never cracked a panel yet. On masonry we use concrete screws. Contractor caulk and glue for the rest.
On preparation: the instructions say solid backing, and in practice we have installed these on walls with no preparation at all and had no trouble. Sound, solid, and reasonably flat is the real requirement. This is one of the genuine advantages of the product, because it will go over surfaces that would need serious making good before you could paper or tile them.
You can, and we have, usually to tie a panel into an existing room colour. But generally do not. These arrive finished, and the finish is a large part of what you are paying for. Painting a factory finish to match a wall colour is a reasonable reason; painting because you think you can improve it is not.
Buy the sample first, because it is real product and it will settle the argument faster than any photograph. Choose interlock unless you have a reason not to. Order corner pieces rather than planning to mitre. Tell them if you are stacking. Take the real coverage figure off the product page rather than assuming eight square feet, and put it into the calculator before you order, because the lead time is ten to twenty business days and a short order costs you a fortnight rather than a hundred dollars.
